Product Summary

Boost your brood with VitaHive™ Brood Booster™.

Brood Booster has been formulated from scientifically researched ingredients to help break winter dormancy by stimulating the queen to lay.

Brood Booster supplies essential amino acids, plant oils and nutrients to the hive when naturally available levels are low. This encourages the queen to increase her laying rate earlier and therefore achieve stronger hives sooner.

The addition of essential oils also helps aid digestion, improve uptake, delays sugar fermentation and may also reduce Nosema and gut parasite infections with long term use.

Achieving peak colony size is a journey that takes several months, by feeding Brood Booster in the winter you can achieve higher laying rates earlier in the season. This translates to reaching peak hive size sooner, improving honey yields and pollination or providing the ability to create more splits.

Feeding Tips

Feed late Winter and into Spring in order to build your hives ready for the honey flow.

Depending on your location this means you should start feeding in July or August and continue through till your hive reaches the desired strength. Always stop sugar feeding prior to the first nectar flow.

Although Brood Booster does not contain any additives or chemicals that could adulterate your honey we don’t recommend feeding your hives with honey supers on. Supplemental feeding of hives during nectar flows can increase your C4 sugars and ultimately affect the value of your honey.

Precautions

  • Strong hive stimulation will require sufficient feed to maintain strength
  • Do not feed in late autumn unless you intend to provide continued sustenance
  • Shake well before use
  • Feed volumes appropriate to hive volume and strength
  • Always use clean feeders and equipment
  • Keep out of reach of children
  • In case of eye or skin contact rinse well with water and consult a medical professional if irritation occurs

Mixing Instructions

  1. Shake bottle thoroughly to mix ingredients
  2. Add 10mls of Brood Booster per litre of light sugar syrup
  3. Mix thoroughly and feed promptly
During periods of pollen shortages dosing can be increased to 20mls per litre.

FAQs

How does Brood Booster help my hives?

Brood Booster supplies essential amino acids, plant oils and nutrients to the hive when naturally available levels are low. This spurs the queen to increase her laying rate earlier and therefore achieve stronger hives ahead of the competition. Achieving peak colony size is a journey that takes several months, by feeding Brood Booster in the winter you can achieve higher laying rates earlier in the season. This translates to reaching peak hive size sooner. The addition of essential oils also helps aid digestion, delays sugar fermentation and may also reduce Nosema and gut parasite infections with long term use.

What makes Brood Booster different to other nutritional products?

Brood Booster was not formulated incidentally or discovered washed up on the shore. It has been formulated using the latest honey bee nutrition research to deliver tangible outcomes. We thoroughly tested our product and had numerous iterations to achieve our final Brood Booster formulation. Our ongoing efficacy testing, quality control programme and production methods all translate to a consistent product that won’t vary by batch and will always deliver better brood.

Can I feed use Brood Booster all year round?

Brood Booster has been formulated for use coming out of winter and into the spring. Depending on your location this means you should start feeding in July or August and continue through till your hive reaches the desired strength. Always stop sugar feeding prior to the first nectar flow. This will vary by region, but as a rule of thumb Brood Booster is best fed from late winter through into the spring.

Will Brood Booster leave residues in my honey?

Brood Booster does not contain any additives or chemicals that can adulterate your honey. Be wary of C4 sugar however, as with all hive feeding this can end up in capped cells and may impact the price you receive for your honey.Typically, its best to stop supplemental feeding prior to the first nectar flow.Although not recommended, stimulation of hives with Brood Booster can continue during nectar flows. In order to reduce C4 sugars use a drizzle application rather than bulk feeding. To do this make up a triple concentrate of Brood Booster (30mls/L of syrup). For a full depth single brood box hive drench one cup over the top bars, bees and frames of the hive. (Adjust volume for larger or smaller hives). Bee hives do need sugar to grow however so only drench feed when natural nectar is available or you know your hives have sufficient stores to sustain themselves.

Can I feed while honey supers are on?

No, we don’t recommend this. As fellow beekeepers here at VitaHive we strive to produce pure honey products. Feeding while honey supers are on increases the risk of your bees storing sugar solution in your honey supers.

Will Brood Booster harm my bees?

No, Brood Booster is all natural and will not harm your bees. What you will see is an increase in young bees and an overall increase in hive size, vitality and brood laying.

How much should I feed?

10 mls/L is great when feeding in a top or side feeder. For drenching or when there is very little natural nectar and pollen available increase up to 30mls/L.

What can I use Brood Booster for?

Quite simply.Boosting your brood! Many competing products don’t, or can’t say, what they can do for your hive. We’re so sure it will boost your brood we put it in the name!

Not only can you can use Brood Booster to encourage laying in weak hives, improve feed uptake in hard to feed hives and also give splits and nucs a good start in life.

Is Brood Booster GMO free?

Yes, Brood Booster is GMO free. At VitaHive we follow an informed choice mentality. We encourage all consumers to make up their own mind on whether feeding GMO products is an issue for them, and ultimately their honey consumers.New Zealand has no regulation to require GMO labelling on animal feeds. This means that unless a manufacturer declares their GMO status a product cannot be assumed to be GMO free. This is not the same as the labelling requirements on food for human consumption which do require this to be stated. So, unless a bee nutrition product states it’s GMO free (and has the certification to prove it!) take caution before feeding it to your bees.

As a matter of course VitaHive goes above and beyond minimum labelling requirements. We will always have available the GMO status, Production dates and locations and ingredients used in our products.

Do you have research available to support your claims?

We have thoroughly tested this product on our own hives and with many commercial beekeepers around New Zealand. As we formulated our product based on peer reviewed research we are confident of its abilities. As new research and feedback comes to light we will share it on our website.

Has Brood Booster been field tested and trialled on hives?

Yes. We have tested this product on hundreds, if not thousands of hives. Our research has shown strong benefit over standard sugar feed and other common additives on the market. If you don’t believe us, try it on your hives this Spring and see the results for yourself.

Will Brood Booster cause sugar syrup to ferment?

No. Syrup fermentation is caused by microbial contamination. We have added natural antimicrobial essential oils that slow fermentation. This means feed won’t go off before the bees have taken it all up. These same anti-microbial oils are also responsible for helping cleanse the bees gut and digestive tract.

What Brix sugar syrup should I use?

Brood Booster is best fed using light sugar syrup (50 brix. 1:1) as it more closely matches the sugar concentration of nectars.

If you are feeding in the winter or autumn heavy syrup (67brix, 2:1) can be used.

NOTE: Most liquid sugar is sold as heavy sugar syrup (known as 67 brix or 2:1).Creating light sugar syrup (50 brix or 1:1) from heavy sugar syrup is easy - for every litre of 67 brix sugar syrup add an additional 450ml of water.

Testimonials

Thank you for the sample of Brood Booster. I have used this product in 2 hives and have found it works well. Both hives improved within 2 weeks. After thinking i was going to lose these hives, it was with great pleasure to see them boost up so quickly. I would recommend Brood Booster to all beekeepers!

Puwera Honey

I was a little surprised when Ecrotek offered a trial of their new VitaHive range of products as I thought it was just another supplement on the market trying to cash in on high manuka prices. Despite this I was very pleased and surprised with the results of both Brood Booster and Power Feed pollen supplements. It’s also great to know these products are GMO free and made in New Zealand
